Land Use

Before this visit, my vision of Japan was influenced by photos of pedestran crossings in Ginza and the crowded trains in Tokyo. I envisioned to see lots of tall residential buildings and lots in traffic jams. To my big surprise, most people, other than Tokyo, live in two or three storied houses. While the trains and buses are crowded, I did not see the horrendous traffic jams common in China and the U.S. Furthermore, many people ride their bikes, even in Tokyo. But we found not much of that, not even in Tokyo. Japan (and Japanese) is much more relaxed and orderly than what I expected.
